Caring & Maintaining Lithium Batteries

Proper understanding and care of your electric golf buggy and its battery are key to ensuring peace of mind and years of enjoyment on the golf course.

Lithium batteries are favoured for their versatility, recharging capabilities, and compatibility with various devices, from smartphones to electric vehicles and solar energy systems. Lightweight and high-energy density make them ideal for extended runtimes and enhanced portability.

These batteries boast low self-discharge rates, retaining power even during inactivity, and are environmentally friendly, with fewer harmful chemicals and extended lifespans compared to older battery technologies.

It is crucial to handle lithium batteries with care to prevent thermal runaway, which can lead to fires or explosions. Proper charging, storage at suitable temperatures, avoiding water exposure, and adherence to correct charging and discharging practices are essential for safety. By following these guidelines, users can prolong the battery's lifespan, reduce replacements, minimize environmental impact, and ensure efficient and responsible use for various applications.

With the right care and usage, there's no need to worry about the safety of lithium batteries, allowing users to enjoy their benefits worry-free.

Caring for you lithium battery

Regularly inspect your lithium battery leads, casing, and connections for signs of damage or wear. If you notice worn or damaged connections, do not use the battery to prevent potential fires.

After playing golf, clean excess dirt, or debris from the battery casing with a brush and wipe it down carefully with a damp cloth. Avoid using pressure washers, taps, or hoses on your buggy or battery.

When charging the lithium battery, do so under cover, preferably indoors in a well-ventilated area, on a solid surface like concrete. Avoid charging in cars or on surfaces such as carpets or rugs. Be mindful of your surroundings; keep the charging area clear of items like heaters, radiators, air conditioners, and naked flames, and ensure it is protected from rain or water exposure.

Check the power connection for faults and refrain from using power boards and extension leads, as sparks can lead to battery fires. Charge the battery after every use, regardless of the duration. During charging, maintain an ambient temperature between 5°C to 30°C, with an optimal temperature of 15°C. Avoid leaving your battery connected to the powered charger for more than 10 hours to ensure its longevity and safety.

Be vigilant regarding the battery's plastic shell; cracks or damage to the housing might permit water entry, posing a fire risk. It's important to note that physical damage might not be visible if the lithium battery has suffered water damage.

For the safety of our repair technicians, it is imperative to be honest and transparent about any damage your battery or buggy may have sustained. If uncertain, refrain from charging your battery, as this could pose a hazard.

Water Damage

If your lithium battery is submerged in water, whether fully or partially, even briefly, cease its use immediately. Proper disposal is necessary. Avoid driving your buggy through deep puddles where water reaches the base of the axle. If the battery has been submerged, disconnect it from your buggy without delay. It cannot be reused and must not be reconnected to the buggy or charger.

Residual water and debris may remain in the battery terminals. Connecting the battery to a charger or buggy in this state could result in arcing and/or short-circuiting. Water-damaged lithium batteries pose a significant fire risk and must be disposed of responsibly. Please be aware that water or moisture entering the battery or buggy voids all specified warranties on the affected parts. If uncertain, do not charge the battery, as it can pose a hazard.

Under no circumstances should you attempt to open a lithium battery for any reason. It is an electrical device and must never be tampered with.

Impact Damage

Impact damage can occur if the battery is accidentally dropped during loading or unloading the buggy from your car's trunk. It can also happen if the buggy collides with a bunker, causing damage to the battery.

To assess the damage, thoroughly inspect the battery for visible signs. Keep in mind that not all damage may be apparent; sometimes, a decrease in performance could indicate internal issues. If you have any concerns or notice visible signs of battery damage, it is advisable to contact an Authorised Service Centre promptly for expert advice.
